SAHS Has Opened its Doors!

We are now open to the public on Thursday, Friday and Saturday from 9am to 2pm.  During renovation, our facility is an education center offering the valuable services listed below to the community.  At this time, we are not accepting, housing or adopting animals.  Come visit us and see our newly renovated lobby featuring beautiful pet tribute and memorial tiles on our front counter.

Low-Cost Spay/Neuter

The Humane Society of the United States estimates that there are over 70,000 puppies and kittens born every twenty-four hours nationwide.  The vast majority of these baby animals end up unwanted and in shelters, where 61% of the dogs and 75% of the cats are euthanized – up to 6 million animals every year.  To help combat these heart-wrenching statistics, the St. Augustine Humane Society offers low-cost spay and neuter of pet cats, feral cats, and dogs in St. Johns County at the low price of $50 for cats and $75 for dogs, which includes a rabies vaccination.  Additional vaccinations, microchip and other services are also available at reduced rates.

The low-cost fee includes free transport in the SAHS Spay Shuttle to and from Jacksonville for same-day surgery.  The next Spay Shuttle launches on Thursday, Marth 18th.  For the immediate future, the Spay Shuttle will operate once a month.  April’s shuttle launches on Thursday, April 18th.  Surgery is done at First Coast No More Homeless Pets in Jacksonville.

Room in the Spay Shuttles is limited, so reservations must be made in advance.  To prepay and preregister, visit the St. Augustine Humane Society at 1665 Old Moultrie Road on a Friday or Saturday, between 9am and 2pm.

St. Augustine Humane Society successfully launched our low-cost Spay Shuttle on February 18th.  Over 30 pets were spayed and neutered on that date.  Due to the popularity of the program, we continued the $25 shuttle offer for February 25th and Mar 4th - both shuttles filled up with over 30 pets each. Thank you to the St. Johns County community for supporting spay/neuter efforts and helping save animal lives.

Volunteer Needs

Volunteers are very important to the success of our programs.  To sign up as a volunteer, please visit our website www.staughumane.org or visit our facility to fill out an application.  Current volunteer needs include:

  1. Committee Members – we are currently forming committees to oversee several aspects of our new direction, including:  Pet Food Pantry, Pet Match Service, Humane Education, Dog Wash and Wellness Clinic.
  2. Receptionists/Greeters – volunteers are needed on Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays from 9am to 2pm to help man the phones and greet customers.
  3. North Florida Doxie Days – The Just for the Fun of It 4-H Club is sponsoring a weekend of fun for Dachshunds on Saturday, March 20th and Sunday, March 21st at the St. Johns County Fairgrounds to benefit SJC 4-H and St. Augustine Humane Society.  SAHS will have a booth at the event, and needs volunteers to help man the booth and talk to the public about our new direction.

Give us a call or send an email if you are interested in any of these opportunities.  Future volunteer opportunities are sent out in our monthly newsletter or in an email announcement.

Special Thanks

Special appreciation goes out to the Landrum Middle School Impact Club, Mardi Gras and Flagler Nurses for their generous donations; and to the SJC 4-H County Council for cleaning up our Pet Cemetary.  Special thanks too to the volunteers who helped make our Estate Sale, Spay Shuttle Launches and Opening of our facility such a success; and who performed extra duties like cleaning and organizing our lab and storage places, and interpreting for hearing-impaired dog training students.
